The Return

Vozvrashenie - The Return

1h 45min  |  Drama  |  Release Date: 13.02.2004

Two boys appear to live in a state of relative equilibrium. There is a hole in their lives where their father used to be, but it is stopped with a ten-year-old photo, the sole means by which they remember him. When he abruptly reappears, they are thrown off-kilter and must reconcile the image they had of him with the living, breathing human being who now confronts them. Parallel to the mental voyage upon which they embark is a journey that takes them into the stunning topography of the Russian far north. As the man takes them further into the unknown, they question the validity of his claim that he is their father – and, more importantly, the reasons for his return, especially after such a long interval. The trio moves into ever more mysterious physical and psychological terrain.

"The Return" is directed by Andrei Zvjagintsev and the cast includes Vladimir Garin, Ivan Dobronravov, Konstantin Lavronenko, Natalia Vdovina. The screenplay is written by Vladimir Moiseenko and Aleksander Novototski.

The film was nominated for the Golden Globe in the Best Foreign Language Film category and won the total of five prizes at the prestigious Venice Film Festival, including the Golden Lion and Luigi De Laurentiis Award. The film has also won top prizes at the Thessaloniki, Tromso, Palm Springs, Locarno, Ljubljana and Tallinn International Film Festivals and the director received Discovery of the Year Award at the European Film Awards.
