A 14th century crusader Benham (Nicolas Cage) returns to a homeland devastated by the Black Plague. The dying cardinal, convinced that a young girl (Claire Foy) accused of being black witch is responsible for the devastation, command the knight to transport beautiful girl to monastery, where monks will perform a ritual execution to rid the land of her curse – the curse of Black Plague. The knight agrees on one condition – the girl must face a fair trial before she will be burnt. Benham feels sympathy for young girl, but he doubts that it might be an intrigue of the witch.
