Young Pip´s life is governed by two fateful childhood experiences. First, the terrifying encounter with an escaped convict, whom he obeys under threat of a horrible death to bring him food. Later Pip is invited to the gloomy and decaying mansion of the eccentric Miss Havisham, to become the playmate of her protegée Estella. Many years ago Miss Havisham was left at the altar, and she is determined to avenge herself against all men by having Estella break their hearts. Pip falls instantly in love with the beautiful Estella, but the girl remains distant. One day Pip is visited by a lawyer, who informs him that a mysterious benefactor has offered to transform him into a gentleman, one with "great expectations".
