MET Opera Summer 2016: L'elisir d'amore

2h 22min  |  Opera  |  Release Date: 06.07.2016

In Bartlett Sher’s new staging of the pearl of comic opera, “The Elixir of Love”, Anna Netrebko and Matthew Polenzani take the stage as Adina and Nemorino, who is in love with her. Mariusz Kwiecien is playing the belligerent sergeant Belcore and Ambrogio Maestri performs the role of Dulcamara – the lovable charlatan and elixir dealer. Conducted by Maurizio Benini.

“The Elixir of Love” is Gaetano Donizetti’s comic opera in two acts. Most of the music was composed by Donizetti in less than two weeks. The piece is one of the composer’s most popular and beloved operas, which enjoyed an immensely successful premiere. The opera is included in the standard repertoire of today’s opera theatres thanks to its canorous and witty music.

The events take place in a Tuscan village in the beginning of the 19th century. The young and shy peasant Nemorino is in love with Adina and inspired by the story of Tristan and Isolde, in which love was helped along by a love potion. Adina, however, is a beautiful and capricious landowner’s daughter, who likes to coquette and reject the love of those besotted by her, while being rejected herself by those whom she finds interesting.
