This is the second film of the legendary Rebuild of Evangelion series written and directed by Hideaki Anno. The original Evangelion was a 26-episode anime series created in the nineties, and it is still considered to be one of the most influential anime of all time. The Rebuild movies are an alternate retelling of the series, and - as Anno himself has said - they are what the series would have been like originally if he had only had the technology and budget that he has today.
The film continues the story of Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, with Shinji Ikari continuing his role as a pilot of one of the gigantic ""Evangelion"" mecha as part of NERV's ongoing fight against the mysterious creatures known as Angels. Mari, a new pilot, joins the NERV crew to continue defending Tokyo-3 from the Angels' attacks as the ""Third impact"" approaches, a catastrophe that, if it occurred, would permanently change humanity's destiny.
Although it is highly recommended to have seen the previous film prior to the screening, it is not essential - Evangelion 2.22 can well be enjoyed as a stand-alone over-the-top giant robot action movie.
